Discipline and Freedom

I was speaking with a friend this morning about the quote - “In discipline their is freedom.” He wondered if we could use the words intention rather than discipline, “soften it up a little”. Sometimes we think of discipline as something being forced upon us, taking us back to childhood drills, reprimands or experiences. But this quote makes me think of a discipline that is born from our own desire to nurture and nourish. A way of laying a foundation that gives us ‘freedom’ to build and grow from.

For me, this looks like starting my day with time to be still and ‘tune in,’ often in nature. The daily discipline of this simple 5 minutes can make such a profound difference in my mindset, my heart and my physical body, that I am motivated to continue - not because I ‘have to’ but because I know it bears fruit.

Many of you have your own wellness practices - whether it’s a cold dip in the lake, yoga, meditation, journaling, creating… these are all things that help to build our reservoir. They top us up when things are good, and they keep us afloat through the challenges.

As you move into the holiday season, and then into the new year I encourage you to nurture your own wellness practices, make space and time for them and allow them to refresh you and give you freedom each day.
